30 April 2022Online Scams Break Record In 2021
17 May 2022Funky Pigeon proved it is not impervious to cyber attacks, after having to shut down its e-commerce site following an online breach.
The online greetings card and gifts company reported a cyber security problem on Thursday April 14th, The Guardian revealed.
WHSmith, which owns the business, reassured customers their payment data is safe, as this is processed by third-party providers. However, it is investigating whether personal data, such as names, addresses, and email addresses, have been leaked in the breach.
In a statement, the organisation said: “We take the security of customer data extremely seriously and we have temporarily suspended any new orders via the website.”
Funky Pigeon has been writing to customers that have used its services in the last year about the incident, and has temporarily taken systems offline.
It has involved law enforcement authorities regarding the attack, with the company saying: “Our teams are working around the clock to investigate and resolve this incident.”
Having revealed gaps in the company’s data security, it confirmed it will upgrade its protocols.
Another retailer was hit by a cyber attack earlier this month, as The Works reported a hacker had gained access to its network, disrupting its point-of-sale systems and other business operations.
Consequently, it was forced to close five of its stores around the country, suspend supplies and extend delivery windows. It also disabled all internal and external access to systems, and notified the Information Commissioner’s Office.
These incidents show how even large national businesses are still vulnerable to online attacks. That is why it is essential to invest in business cyber security for as much protection as possible.
